Product detailed description

Tanzania-Edelweiss-Estate-2024-farmaDiscover the charm of Tanzanian coffee grown at the Edelweiss Estate, nestled within the untouched nature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The history of this farm dates back to the early 20th century, when it was founded by German settlers. After World War II it passed into British ownership, and in 1969 it was purchased by the Vohora family, who run it to this day.

Because the estate lies in a remote region of northern Tanzania, the Vohora family works closely with the surrounding communities. They actively support local development and environmental protection—funding schools, offering apprenticeships, and creating childcare facilities for the children of their employees. They also strive for harmonious coexistence with wildlife that frequently crosses the plantation from the nearby conservation area.Tanzania-Edelweiss-Estate-2024-farma2

The coffee trees grow at altitudes of 1650–1820 m, and the cherries are harvested and processed using traditional methods. For this lot of Bourbon & Kent, the cherries are first transported to the estate’s wet mill, where they pre-ferment for two days in hermetically sealed tanks. The pulp is then removed, and the coffee undergoes a second fermentation lasting 26 to 54 hours. Finally, the beans are thoroughly washed and dried for several days under the full African sun.

Most Tanzanian Arabica is grown in the north around Kilimanjaro and in the southern regions of Mbeya and Ruvuma. The trees thrive on the mineral-rich volcanic soils between 1,000 and 2,500 meters above sea level, often shaded by banana trees.

Tanzania produces around 70% Arabica coffee. Most is grown by smallholders farming 0.5–5.5 hectares; only about 10% of total production comes from larger estates, such as Machare Estate in the Kilimanjaro region.

Tanzanian coffees are known for their pleasant aroma, bright acidity and full body. The volcanic soil enriches their natural sweetness and adds depth to their balanced flavour profile.
