Product detailed description
We have roasted many wonderful African coffees in our roastery, but this harvest from Tanzania has truly captured our hearts. We are delighted to share a real treat with you – Tanzania Itumpi.
This coffee comes from southwestern Tanzania, specifically from the Mbozi district in the Songwe region. Imagine slopes at an altitude of 1,500 to 1,700 metres, where coffee trees grow in highly fertile volcanic soil. While they bask in the warm African sun during the day, the nights here are extremely cold. This dramatic temperature difference is key to the bean quality – the cherries ripen much slower, making the beans incredibly dense and concentrating the very best of the local terroir.
Behind every single bean is an immense amount of honest, manual work. The coffee is grown by about 160 smallholder farming families, united under the traditional Itumpi AMCOS cooperative. They cultivate their small plots with deep respect for nature. It is common practice to intercrop the coffee trees with maize or beans, which naturally enrich the soil, help retain precious moisture, and prevent erosion. All coffee cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness and transported to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) on the very same day. Here, the coffee undergoes careful washed processing and is dried exclusively on raised African beds, ensuring brilliant clarity of flavor.
This lot is graded as AB. In Tanzania, green coffee is sorted primarily by physical size and density, with the AB grade representing beans captured on screen sizes 15 and 16. From a roasting perspective, this is absolute perfection. The beans in this lot are beautifully uniform, which allows for a remarkably consistent and stable roast. Thanks to this, we can use our roasting profile to unlock the coffee's maximum potential.
And what can you expect in the cup? Southern Tanzania is a completely different world compared to the rest of East African coffee production. While northern Tanzanian coffees tend to be very light and delicate, the unique microclimate of the Mbozi area gives this coffee an incredibly robust and solid structure. It boasts an exceptionally heavy, velvety, almost syrupy body, which provides the perfect foundation for a sparkling and vibrant acidity. It is a beautifully balanced coffee that is delightfully fruity, yet has an exceptionally deep, full flavour.
