Product detailed description

india-malabar-aa-monsooned

BotaCoffee proudly brings you this exceptional Indian coffee with a truly unique character. Its beans are unlike any other—large and pale yellow when unroasted, not due to the variety but because of the special monsooning process. Even after roasting, the beans remain large, smooth, and glossy, carrying the signature flavor that many coffee lovers adore.

This coffee is especially ideal for milk-based drinks, as it maintains its strong coffee character even with a generous amount of milk.

A bit of history:
Monsooned coffee was actually discovered by accident. In the days of tall sailing ships, coffee beans shipped from India to Europe had to journey around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Exposed to tropical humidity, salty winds, and fluctuating temperatures in wooden ship hulls, the beans underwent significant changes. When they arrived in Europe—months later—they had become pale, swollen, and full-bodied with reduced acidity. Surprisingly, this "weathered" coffee gained immense popularity across Europe.india-malabar-aa-monsooned-monzunovani

Monsooned coffee today:

Today, with modern shipping and the Suez Canal shortening travel time, Indian farmers have successfully recreated the original conditions on land. Carefully harvested beans are typically washed and then stored for 12–16 weeks in open-sided warehouses along India’s Malabar Coast, near the city of Mangalore. During monsoon season, the beans are exposed to high humidity and monsoon winds that mimic the traditional sea voyage. This slow transformation process must be closely monitored to prevent mold.

The coffee is grown in the Karnataka region of southwest India, and it is processed in both Arabica and Robusta varieties. Our lot is of the AA grade—denoting high bean size and quality.
